2011 St Aubin Blanc 1er Cru Derriere Chez Edouard

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is a sense of airiness on nose of the Saint Aubin 1er Cru Derriere Chez Edouard that is very lifted with crisp definition, although it is difficult to define specific aromas apart from what you might call white Burgundy. The palate is precise on the entry with a twist of bitter lemon, cooking apple and a touch of lemongrass, finishing with more style and conviction than the aromatics. One has the sense of broaching this way too early.

A totally different side of 2011 comes through in Lamy’s 2011 St. Aubin Derriere Chez Edouard. Rich, voluptuous and beautifully layered in the glass, the Chez Edouard is simply brilliant. Here the flavors are a little richer, warmer and more resonant.

The 2011 St. Aubin Derriere Chez Edouard wraps around the palate with lovely depth, roundness and pure juiciness. Hazelnut, tangerine and spice notes all resonate on the warm, deeply expressive finish. This is an especially rich, weighty St. Aubin with tremendous palate presence and volume, both qualities that will probably become even more noticeable with time.
