The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru perhaps does not possess the complexity of Bruno Colon’s En Remilly tasted alongside, but it unfolds nicely to reveal scents of orange blossom, pressed white flowers and walnut; smokiness emerges with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry, offering fine weight in the mouth and just a touch of reduction that becomes more tangible on the struck-match finish. I am fascinated to see how this continues to develop in bottle. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London.

Light, slightly reduced nose. Sweet start. Emphatic, almost floral nose with real concentration but not much finesse. Chunky. And, at the moment, this is a tad simple. (JR)

Full deep yellow with gold highlights. Ripe peach, clove and smoke on the nose, plus a rich nutty, leesy element. At once dense and penetrating, with a sappy, saline quality to its flavors of pineapple, smoke and spices. This has good energy but is also gentle and balanced. Finishes with sexy oak spices and a light touch. With aeration some of the baby fat melted away and the citrussy acidity made itself felt.

The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée is another beautifully balanced wine. The 2010 has an element of roundness and general expressiveness in the fruit that separates it from some of the other wines here. It strikes a compelling middle ground between the richer and more ethereal wines in the range. Layers of fruit caress the palate on the sweet, inviting finish. The openness and pure resonance in the 2010 are compelling.
