Tasting notes
A very creamy and succulent riesling Auslese that has a wonderful spring-like freshness alongside the ripe, but not overripe peachy fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Long, simultaneously clean and silky finish. Drink or hold.

Revealing a nose of sweet citrus fruits, the 2003 Riesling Auslese Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg #43 (gold cap) is a rich, plush, thick wine whose seamless personality is perilously close to being blowzy. Flavors of caramel are intermingled with candied white fruits in its decadent core. Because it is already showing flavors of burnt sugar, I recommend drinking this wine in the near term though it will undoubtedly last for many more years. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. Still very muted on the nose with definite sulfur and a certain nuttiness. Clean, crystal clear in structure,, but the acid seems remarkably low. (JR)
