Pure brilliance in Côte Rôtie, the 2009 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune is just now in its sweet spot and offers just about everything you could ask for. Vivid ruby-hued, with a kaleidoscope-like array of sweet red and black fruit, spring flowers, incense, smoked meats, and peppery nuances, it brings full-bodied richness as well as a silky, seamless, graceful profile on the palate. One of those powerful yet ethereal wines that's impossible to resist, it has another two decades of prime drinking ahead of it. If I had bottles in my cellar, I wouldn't be able to keep my hands off them.

The fresh, high-toned, floral notes on this nose belie the warmth of the vintage. Highly fragrant with violets, leather, green-olive tapenade, game and oodles of ripe, blue fruit. Seductive on the palate, the plentiful tannins are cloaked in the succulent fruit and increasing savoury depth. Finely balanced, with the signature fresh acid lift on the back end, it is absolutely gorgeous. (TP)

There are only about 200 cases of the 2009 Cote Rotie Cote Brune, which sees around 15% new oak. Made in a denser, more muscular, masculine style, it offers abundant notes of creme de cassis, black raspberries, licorice, roasted meats and tobacco leaf. Heady, rich and full-bodied, it should drink well for 10-15+ years. (It was scheduled to be bottled immediately after my visit.)
