The 2001 Barbaresco Martinenga has developed beautifully. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, licorice, anise and mint all take shape in a striking, medium-bodied Barbaresco endowed with superb elegance and complexity. The 2001 is peaking now, with lovely layers of tertiary complexity and terrific overall balance. This is a gorgeous, mature Barbaresco with more than enough stuffing and tannin to drink well for the better part of the decade.

The 2001 Barbaresco Martinenga, a medium ruby, is the estate's entry-level Barbaresco. It is delicate and floral on the nose, with flavors of spices, bright red cherry fruit, menthol and licorice on a classically-styled, medium-bodied frame of great length. It is the most accessible of these Barbarescos.

Medium cherry-red. Perfumed aromas of redcurrant, cherry, raspberry and fresh rose petal. Sweet, lush and bright; fleshier than the 2000 edition and more seamless. Not hugely complex but subtle and perfumed. Rather full for a wine from this estate but with lovely spice and energy. Finishes with sweet tannins and persistent red fruits and flowers. Unfortunately, the estate did not make available its Gaiun and Camp Gros bottlings from this excellent vintage. (Dalla Terra, Sonoma CA
