Tasting notes
The 2002 Riesling Auslese Erdener Treppchen ** exhibits great aromatic depth and richness as well as a powerful, broad, and sultry core of fruit. Candied apples and poached pears are found throughout this plush offering’s bold flavor profile and silky finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2028. All of Weingut Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben’s wines revealed relatively high levels of CO2 (a natural by-product of fermentation that disappears with time). Readers who find this trait unpleasant should wait 1-2 years before opening any of this estate’s 2002s. With a light shaking off of spritz and yeast, this explodes with aromas of candied lemon, honeysuckle, poached peach and strawberry-orange liqueur. The palate is satin-textured, tremendously rich and intensely ripe yet not in the least turgid or heavy, and suffused with floral and herbal essences, spices and mineral salts. Long and lipsmacking. 2 stars.
