Black! Looks very youthful. Pungent and so direct up the nose! Pure liquorice balm. Impressive, even if not flattering. Definitely a ‘black’ Grange according to Nick Ryan’s classification of red and black ones. (JR)

This has a spicy nose with intense blackberry, cedar and strong, savory, Barossa-driven, tarry accents. The palate has a bold core of ripe blackberries and blueberries with mocha and sweetly ripe tannins that fan out long, plush and full. In a good place and still very young. Drink or hold.
Wow – such a big jump up from the 2005, with stunning blue fruit, firm tannins, super-sweet spice and awesome persistence. This is Grange in all its pomp, and it is only just now starting to exhibit complexity – meat, chocolate, tar, earth. One of the greats. (RH)
Gago opened two bottles of this wine, both of which showed signs of past seepage, hence my question mark after the rating. I suspect pristine bottles will show better than these did. A bit mossy and sullen, the 2004 Grange is going through a cranky adolescence. Mocha, cedar and dark fruit on the nose are echoed on the palate of this full-bodied, concentrated wine. It's dark and rich, just needs another 5-6 years to emerge on the other side.
