The 2001 Lamothe Guignard does not possess a complex nose, but it is fresh, offering marmalade and quince aromas and a light adhesive note in the background. The palate is viscous on the entry with tangy marmalade and Aszú-like notes, but it stumbles toward the finish and just forgets to deliver the requisite complexity. Not bad, though, and it shows better than back in 2014 when I last tasted it.

The Lamothe Guignard has a simple but effective bouquet with mandarin, dried pineapple and spice scents that would benefit from more definition. The palate is well balanced but rather simple and needing more depth on what is a linear finish. This was one of the disappointments of this blind horizontal tasting.

Pale orange-gold. High-toned, fruity aromas of orange, apricot, peach schnapps and menthol. Fat, spicy and quite firm-edged; a bit youthfully ungiving and sulfury today, with a dusty, almost tannic finish and strong lingering spice character. Difficult to assess now.
