The 2000 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is a dry, spice-scented wine. Rich layers of yellow fruits and flowers can be discerned in its detailed, medium-bodied character. Exhibiting outstanding depth of fruit and breadth, it is an elegant, finely etched Gewurztraminer. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. Olivier Humbrecht describes 2000 as "a year of excellent ripeness where the key to success was sorting out the bad rot prior to harvesting." To accomplish this, Humbrecht sent out teams to go through every parcel, dropping whatever bunches had been infected with sour rot. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's harvest lasted 6 weeks, with one-fourth being accomplished between September 19 and October 5th, and the remaining three-fourths picked by October 31st. Spices and smoked meat on the nose. Juicy and spicy in the mouth; not at all unctuous but rather powerful and uncompromising. If a gewurztraminer with this much alcohol can be said to be elegant, this may be the one.
