The 2002 Cantenac Brown feels rather anonymous on the nose, lacks distinguishable fruit characteristics and even the secondary aromas seem to have buggered off some years ago. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite dry tannins; this is an austere Margaux, not a complete write-off, but unmemorable. Tasted at the Cantenac Brown vertical at the château.

Ruby-red. Slightly rustic aromas of redcurrant, leather and meat. Leaner and cooler than the 2003 or 2004, with notes of blueberry, fresh herbs and minerals. Today the wine's acids and tannins are in opposition. I'd give this wine three or four years in the bottle to harmonize.

A narrowly constructed effort with an abundance of firm tannin as well as herbaceous, damp earthy notes, and notions of red and black currant fruit, the 2002 possesses decent acidity and an austere personality. Drink it over the next decade.

Very, very deep purple. Scented, lively nose. Quite attractive, but some greenness on the palate. In the end, a bit stodgy. Neat and well balanced, but no ingredient X. (JR)
