Score 90/100 · Drink 1994-2009, Robert Parker, Jan 1998

Chateau de Malle's 1990 is the finest sweet wine the estate had made in decades. Certainly it is an outstanding effort, and given the reasonable price, it is a noteworthy purchase. The 1990 is full-bodied, with excellent sweetness, fine purity, and plenty of rich, honeyed fruit buttressed by noticeable new oak. It has not yet developed the complexity and aromatics displayed by the 1988, but the 1990 is clearly an outstanding effort for the vintage. It should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. Gold-tinged straw-yellow. Ripe, slightly high-toned, rot-ennobled aromas of dried fruits, pineapple, fresh apple, honey and nuts; very aromatic. Thick and intensely flavored in the mouth, with impressive concentration and plenty of viscosity. Quite mouthfilling and honeyed. Finishes very long, with honey and licorice notes and a strong botrytis character. Also a hint of heat. Finished with 70 grams per liter residual sugar, considerably higher than either '89 or '88.
