(bottled in May of '09) Good full red. Reticent but pure aromas of redcurrant, mocha, iron, brown spices and earth. Sweet on entry, then clenched in the middle, showing a mineral firmness that's just short of hard. In a distinctly masculine style, with the tannins currently cutting off the fruit. I described a barrel sample of this wine as cabernet-like last year, and I still wonder if this will put on flesh with time in the bottle. Hands off for at least five or six years.

Good ruby-red. Black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate and graphite on the nose. Then quite firm and serious in the mouth, with its fruit element dominated by its spine. Quite tight and tannic, and currently showing limited flesh and pliancy. This reminded me a bit of cabernet. These vines are in Combe d'Orveau, the high northwest corner of the cru, and are picked at the end. This is the only one of these wines that had been racked before my visit. About 40% of these vines are 75 years old, while the rest are 25.
Very, very sweet fondue nose, atypical. Seductive but not especially fresh. Something a bit medicinal. Pretty sumptuous and not so dissimilar to old Engel wines. But very distinctive. Rich. Sort of gout russe. Thick. Quite chewy on the end. Again slightly fades on the finish. Heady, thick. Quite masculine. (JR)
deft touch of oak highlights very ripe yet fresh and elegant black fruit brimming with spices such as anise, clove as well as soy and hoisin that are picked up by the earthy and slightly sauvage flavors that are supple, textured and dense on the balanced, sappy and rather masculine and moderately austere finish. This is a big Echézeaux and one that should reward 8 to 10 years of cellar time.
