The 2009 Echezéaux is strikingly beautiful but is also intense and tightly wound. The tannins are surprisingly firm within the context of the year. Dark red fruit, flowers, mint and licorice are some of the many nuances that take shape in the glass. This remains a decidedly powerful Echézeaux, even within the context of the year. Readers will need to give the 2009 at least several years to soften, but all of the ingredients are there for this to be a magical bottle.

(Pacalet's first vintage for this cuvee, which comes from vines averaging 60 years of age in the lieu-dit Clos Saint-Denis, just north of Les Suchots; 25% new oak) Medium bright red. Aromas of red cherry, flowers and chocolate perked up by pepper and spices; began quite expressive but then shut down in the glass. Broad on entry, then surprisingly firm in the middle, with soil-driven flint and iron notes. Showing much less sweetness today than the Charmes-Chambertin or Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Finishes with mounting dusty tannins.
