Score 90/100 · Drink 1999-2012, Robert Parker, Aug 1995

I found Jayer-Gilles' 1993s to be mixed in quality. The overall style is one of low PHs, tart, high acids, and tough tannin. In the finest wines there is enough concentration of ripe fruit to balance out the structural components. With high acidity, high tannin, as well as a vibrant, crisp freshness, the Echezeaux exhibits an impressive dark ruby color, and a light intensity nose of raspberries and cherries intermingled with scents of toasty new oak. Medium-bodied and vivacious with the vintage's tartness well-displayed, this outstanding wine is the epitome of elegance. It will be especially adored by structuralists and oenologists. Cellar it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 10-12. Patience will be a virtue for Jayer's 1993s. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083
