Score 89/100 · Drink 2005-2011, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2003

A tight, austere wine, the 2001 Corton-Charlemagne exhibits a profound nose of pears, apples, minerals, and cloves. Light to medium-bodied, it displays loads of citrus fruits and minerals in its well-concentrated core. Projected maturity: 2005-2011. The talented, young Mounir Saouma, this negociant’s founder, director, and winemaker, stated that, for the whites there may have been a little less rot but more unripe berries. Many of my colleagues were worried about volatile acidity, I wasn’t, and left the wines on their healthy lees as long as possible.” Importer: Jeffrey Davies Signature Selections, West Nyack, NY; tel. (malo and sugar fermentation done) Spiced apple and minerals on the nose. Intensely flavored and penetrating, with flavors of nutmeg and stone. At once brisk and dense, with excellent length and cut. Saouma says this has more power than the 2000, but the earlier wine is also impressive. (The Puligny-Montrachet Folatieres showed penetrating floral and mineral character and strong promise, but still had some unfermented sugar and malic acidity.)
