Coche's 2004 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is drinking fabulously today, bursting with aromas of sweet citrus and orchard fruits, buttered toast, white flowers and clear honey. Full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and a generous but beautifully balanced profile, this is a vintage that readers should be tapping into today, as it is really at the peak of its powers and much more open than was the case five or six years ago.

The 2004 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has an intense nose of yellow plum, Japanese yuzu and popcorn. But the quality really lies on the palate with its killer line of acidity and mineralité . It's not a voluminous or weighty Corton-Charlemagne, nor does it come near the breathtaking precision of the '05, yet the 2004 has an endearing lemon balm finish. Interestingly, whilst initially ahead of Roumier's '04 Corton-Charlemagne, by the end of the evening this is just a couple of steps behind. Tasted at the Richebourg vertical dinner in Taipei.
