Magnum generously donated by Tim Littler who has long championed the wines of Louis Latour and claims you have to wait many a long year for them to prove their worth – even this one from the notorious heatwave year. This deep gold, almost viscus wine was very rich indeed – teetering on the edge of heaviness – but with great vibrancy and huge appeal. Perhaps not the most complex but miles better than many a Corton-Charlemagne. (JR)

All of 14 per cent, this wine was a bit reduced on the nose when I tasted it. Certainly there is no grand cru glamour at the moment – just lots of alcohol but not an enormous amount of flavour or excitement. Edge of filter pad? Not nearly as exciting as the 2002 currently stocked by Majestic with its telltale almond note. We must hope that it grows into greatness. Still quite astringent. Alcohol but not remarkable depth. Just sweet and simple at the moment. (JR)
Louis Latour’s 2003 Corton-Charlemagne (white) was harvested at 14% natural potential alcohol. It displays rich, smoky aromas of minerals, sage, and toast. Armed with excellent depth of fruit, this light to medium-bodied offering is packed with minerals and fresh herbs that linger in its extensive yet slightly warm (from alcohol) finish. Austere at present, and slightly tight, it will require some patience. Projected maturity: 2008-2014. Maison Louis Latour has numerous importers across the United States.
About the producer
The Latour family has been growing vines in Burgundy since at least 1731. Their négociant business – today one of the region’s biggest names – was founded in 1797. Still family-owned today, the company owns 48 hectares of vines, 27 of which are Grand Cru, as well as its own cooperage.
