The 1999 Corton Charlemagne possesses tremendous freshness and power to match its decidedly phenolic-feeling sense of structure. Remarkably vivid and nuanced for such a big wine, the 1999 Corton is also incredibly fresh for a wine that will soon reach its 20th birthday.

Deep gold. Rich, sweet nose but with lots of acidity underneath. Real nobility and great persistence. For the moment it seems a bit too tart. I wonder how it will evolve? Extreme wine. (JR)
A rich, dramatic wine, the 1999 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru bursts with aromas of caramelized citrus, pear, verbena flowers and honeycomb. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and powerful, with chewy extract and structure, displaying immense concentration and stony depth. It's still shockingly youthful, so I may be underestimating it, but I didn't find it quite as complete or profound as the two 1999s from Domaine d'Auvenay that accompanied it.
