The 1999 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a vintage that I have tasted once before. I am not totally convinced that Christophe Roumier made a success this year. This has a stubborn, muted nose that only ekes out the lemon curd and dried honey scents noted before. This has additional scents of walnut and beeswax, but the aromas don't really engage. The palate is better with a pleasant waxy texture, moderate depth and light notes of quince, but compared to the previous example, this is missing some tension. Tasted at the Roumier 1988 dinner at Noizé.

The 1999 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru offers lemon curd, patisserie and dried honey scents on the nose, all with impressive definition. There is almost a Rhône-like quality to the aromatics. The palate is sweet and quite candied with a light waxy texture countered by a fine line of acidity, hints of quince developing towards the finish and a touch of peppermint. This Corton-Charlemagne is drinking beautifully now but should continue to give pleasure over the next decade. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.
