The 1971 was the freshest and most vibrant wine in this grouping. Still powerful and dense, I found a compelling array of violets, exotic spices, mint and tar wrapped around an intense, deep frame. Well-stored bottles of the 1971 continue to deliver the goods.
The 1971 Barolo Collina Rionda was pretty much at peak. Sweet, floral layers of perfumed fruit caressed the palate in a sensual, silky style. While the 1971 Collina Rionda lacks the pedigree of the finest vintages, it is a beautiful bottle perfect for near-term enjoyment.
About the producer
Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
