Tasting notes
Along with the 2012 Wiltinger Alte Reben the 2012 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett is probably the best buy from St. Urbans-Hof of the vintages 2012 and 2013. Sourced from an old and warm 2-hectare block that was never reallocated and consolidated (flurbereinigt), the pale-colored Riesling opens clear and precise, yet flinty and somewhat untamed on the nose, also displaying ripe, yellow-fleshed stone-fruit aromas. Fascinatingly pure, piquant and full of finesse on the light-footed palate, where ultra-ripe and juicy tropical fruit flavors give a lush but well-focused and stimulatingly precise impression leading to an elegant and persistent salty finish.

We need not be put off unduly by the presence of spontaneous fermentation aromas, as a generous input of ripe citrus fruit is already making its presence felt with mouthwateringly juicy flavours of grapefruit and orange. Though minerality never seems to be a dominating factor in the make-up of the Goldtröpfchen, it still adds that little bit extra that makes this vineyard one of my favourites. Residual sweetness and acidity have entered into a harmonious partnership where both are allowed to express themselves in equal and tasteful measure. Sheer Kabinett delight. (MS)
