Score 90/100 · Drink 2010-2013, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2010

Another aussie that’s aging gracefully, the 2003 Kaesler Shiraz Stonehorse offers mainly raspberry and cassis scented aromatics that are intermixed with spice, earth and a touch of smoke. The wine has shed its considerable baby fat that it possesses early in its life and now shows a lighter, medium to full bodied palate that shows sweet fruit, fresh acidity and a clean finish. The fruit is just slightly starting to fade on the finish so I would drink any remaining bottles over the next 2 to 3 years. Still, this is a pretty wine that’s drinking very well at the moment.

A fruit-driven, exotic, in-your-face cuvee, the 2003 Shiraz Stonehorse (which spends time in old oak) does not possess the structure found in the Old Vine The Hammer. It offers lovely black cherry and blackberry fruit as well as medium to full body, but not as much espresso roast, vanilla, or tannin as the 2002 Old Vine. This richly fruity offering sells for a song. It should drink well for a decade or more. It is a great introduction to the more seriously structured, denser Kaesler style.
