The 2001 Roc de Cambes needs a little more time and aeration to cohere in the glass compared to the 2000. It eventually acquiesces to reveal dark berry fruit, autumn leaves, orange blossom and hints of tea leaf. The palate is well balanced and lightly spiced (less than the 2000 perhaps), with mellow tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and very harmonious and smooth toward the finish. This actually grows and deepens in the glass, revealing impressive length and grace. Excellent.

Mitjavile opines: 'Autumnal maturation with degraded fresh and little red and black fruit. A wonderful vintage – chatoyant fruit – shimmering.' Floral and beautifully perfumed. Firm but supple, perfumed and tannic, so many layers and still so youthful. Then a hint of coffee and so much delivered and to continue. Of course there’s tertiary flavours but also that floral note. Lively colour with brick rim. Warm, sweet and ripe on the nose. Quite a bit of acidity which shines through. Not quite complete. Hint of cocoa. Not refreshing but palate filling. (JR)

A sensational sleeper of the vintage, this superstar of the Cotes de Bourg appellation, owned by Francois Mitjavile, boasts a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet, seductive bouquet of melted chocolate, licorice, smoke, and jammy black cherry fruit. Flashy, seductive, and medium-bodied, with loads of ripeness in addition to a plush texture, it should be drunk over the next 5-6 years, although it may last longer.
