The 2003 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has a pretty, ripe mulberry-scented nose with hints of espresso coming through with time. Quite plush, but there is decent delineation, given the growing season. The palate is defined by sweet and pliant tannins, not amazingly complex but with satisfying light leathery notes on the finish. A bit faded? Drink soon. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

Produced from a vineyard owned by the engaging Veronique Drouhin, who often serves as this negociant’s ambassador to the United States, the medium-ruby-colored 2003 Vosne-Romanee Les Petits Monts (red) displays intense aromatics of red and black cherries as well as notes of chocolate. This broad, lush effort expands on the palate to reveal loads of dark fruits, coffee, and minerals. Medium-bodied, its finish is firm yet long. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2013.
