Tasting notes
Bright red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry, dried fruits, licorice and slate; shows an exotic roasted character. Highly concentrated but quite tannic, with flavors similar to the aromas. This seemed like a more plush though still quite firm version of the charbono from the same site, which I found distinctly hard-edged.

A terrific wine and perhaps the finest effort yet from this Napa vineyard, the 2003 Zinfandel Tofanelli Vineyard (350 cases; 16% alcohol) possesses fabulous fruit as well as a complex, multi-dimensional bouquet of licorice, black fruits, blueberries, saddle leather, and earthy, composty scents. The wine boasts huge body, a gravelly, scorched earth character, great presence and singularity in the mouth, and a long finish of 40+ seconds. It should drink nicely for 5-7 years.
