Score 92+/100 · Drink 2017-2029, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2017

(tasted from magnum): Moderately saturated medium red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, spices and game, plus a slightly candied quality. Densely packed and still youthful, with red berry and salty mineral flavors complicated by leather and game nuances. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins that should hold this wine for another decade or so; in fact, I got the impression that there's more to come with patience (although I should emphasize that I tasted this wine from a magnum). Sylvie Esmonin told me that she did not start vinifying with whole clusters until 2002, but that in 2001 this wine was aged entirely in new oak and got a full 24 months of élevage . (Incidentally, Esmonin put aside a lot of magnums in 2001, as her daughter was born that year.)

Deep red. Knockout nose combines cherry, chocolate, rose petal, coffee, woodsmoke and bacon fat. Dense, sappy and highly concentrated, with tangy black fruit and bitter chocolate flavors complemented by strong minerality. High-pitched, sharply focused, thoroughly ripe wine, finishing with firm but well-buffered tannins and terrific subtle persistence and grip.

(racked three weeks prior to my visit; aging in about 90% new oak) Red-ruby color. Explosive, complex nose combines red berries, truffle, underbrush, coffee, chocolate, tar and smoky oak. Lush and chocolatey, with lovely intensity and impressive volume. Silky-sweet and rather strongly oaky. Weightier at this stage than most past vintages of this wine but perhaps less subtle.
