1980 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques

Last Tasted 8/92 I hope Burgundy enthusiasts have discovered how wonderful the 1980 vintage is for the wines from the Cote de Nuits. They are worth a search of the marketplace because this year of low yields has turned out some of the best burgundies of the decade. Rousseau's Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St.-Jacques, technically a premier cru, frequently performs at a grand cru level. The fully mature 1980 exhibits a garnet color with light amber at the edge. The fragrant nose is enthralling, with scents of sweet black-cherries, herbs, damp earth, and cedar. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine enjoys excellent balance, good ripeness and freshness, and a long, smooth-as-silk finish. Although the wine has been drinkable for several years, it should keep for another 4-5.
