Medium ruby. This exquisite Barolo opens with a deeply expressive nose of flowers, spices, menthol and licorice followed by superbly delineated layers of fruit on a medium-bodied frame of notable length. Aldo Vajra's Bricco delle Viole is one of the gems of this unheralded vintage. Like Vajra himself, this Barolo is understated, elegant and refined. It will require another year or two in the cellar after which it will drink well for at least another decade.

The 1999 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is the house’s best Barolo of the decade, and among its admirers is Bruno Giacosa. A dark garnet, its complex and penetrating aromas of rose petals, vanilla, cinnamon, and light mint are followed by an unusual power and depth, rich extract and superior density, plush tannins with grip and authority to burn. I would prefer to wait for this wine, and suggest consuming it from 2007 to 2025. Various American importers including The Country Vintner, Oilville, VA; tel. (800) 365-9463
