Tasting notes
Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2006 La Romanée Grand Cru, the first that Louis-Michel Liger-Belair had total control of both vineyard and vinification after the Bouchard Père contract expired, has a fragrant bouquet with red berry fruit, dried orange peel, hints of marmalade and minerals all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-judged acidity. This has an impressive backbone, plenty of white pepper and sage notes, gently building toward a poised finish with just a twist of bitter cherry. This is an outstanding follow-up to the 2005 and may actually constitute one of the very few 2006s that may eventually surpass its 2005 counterpart. Tasted June 2015. eRobertParker.com.July, 2015

Liger-Belair's monopole 2006 La Romanee is impressively redolent of game, wood smoke, strawberry- raspberry preserves, and exotic spices. This coats and clings to the palate with sappy and invigorating fruit, spice, and smoke, as well as with dense, fine-grained tannins. Penetrating in the finish and restlessly alternating between intensely gamey, high-toned fruit distillate, jam, and spice wavelengths. This needs several years of restful evolution but there is little question that some sort of impressive animal is going to emerge over the coming decade or more. Dec 2009, www.robertparker.com
