Tasting notes
The 1999 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is now showing amazing depth and complexity with a never-ending succession of pressed rose, licorice, balsam herb and cherry cola aromas. Small hints of rosemary and wild sage also lift from the bouquet. The vintage saw a mild spring and a hot summer season that made for full fruit ripeness. Indeed, the wine offers a good dose of berry fruit that is a sign of how well it has aged over the years. In the mouth, this older vintage of Rancia presents a fine and silky texture.

The 1999 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an introspective wine that appears to still be stuck in its adolescence. Over time the fruit begins to emerge, but only with great reluctance. This is a complex, broad-shouldered wine with tons of power and big tannins. Hints of dried roses, licorice and rich, expansive fruit saturate the palate on the finish. Readers cellaring the 1999 will need to be patient, but this is a magnificent wine that will be even more compelling as the tannins soften a bit more and the fruit fleshes out.
Slightly tart. Rich and opulent. Lots of fruit. Powerful and dense. (JR)
