Score 19/20 · FINE+RARE

Torbreck’s flagship wine, the 2007 RunRig is a tremendously elegant wine. Made from 97% Shiraz with 3% Viognier, it has a beautifully fragrant bouquet of homemade bramble jelly, blueberries and violets. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with fine silky tannins and crisp acidity. Layers of succulent fruit are complemented by hints of truffles and cloves, which give way to a long earthy, gamey character. FINE+RARE

The 2007 RunRig is from a hot year aligned with 2001, but not as hot as 2003. The 2007 vintage was the start of three drought years in Barossa Valley. The wine leads with roasted meat and sumac, star anise, clove and dark chocolate, while the palate follows with the same characters. This is is both fresh and powerful, with a big presence on the palate. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

98% Shiraz, 2% Viognier. The Shiraz spends 30 months in new and old French barriques. The Viognier is added just before bottling. Spicy nose – very luscious. Sweet and warm but it finishes fresh. Easy to love. (JR)

From a difficult, drought year, the 2007 Torbreck Run Rig is a spectacular effort. A blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier that spent 30 months in both new and old French oak, it delivers a deep, brooding bouquet of smoked plums, roasted meat, black licorice, truffle, and underbrush that gives way to a full-bodied, voluptuous, yet elegantly styled Shiraz that has loads of concentration, a full, mouth filling texture, and brilliant length. This is a big wine, yet it never comes across as heavy, has clean, integrated acidity, and masses of ripe tannin on the finish. It’s approachable now with a decant, but give bottles 2-4 years in the cellar, and then plan on drinking over the following 12-15 years.
