The 1998 Beychevelle is a vintage where I have meted out criticism in the past. I just find this very jejune on the nose, lacking real vigor and presence, fatigued. This feels as if the fruit did not reach full ripeness. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Rather thin for a Grand Cru Classé, this feels dry on the finish. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

This elegant, stylish, well-delineated Beychevelle offers finesse and beauty in a medium-bodied, firmly-structured, flavorful format. Red and black currants, licorice, minerals, spice, and tar notes are subtle, but persuasive. While it does not cut an enormous swath across the palate, the wine's acidity, alcohol, and tannin are well-balanced. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

Tar, berry and fresh herb character. Medium-bodied, with medium tannins and an herbal finish. Not as good as from barrel. Best after 2005. 20,830 cases made. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 2001.

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
