The 2001 Barolo Vigneto Arborina brings together the richness of 2000 along with the structure of the 1999, two qualities it has always shown. The flavors are deep, dense and beautifully laced together, yet today, the 2001 speaks to finesse above all else. (AG)

The 2001 Barolo Arborina is still quite vibrant and primary. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint and licorice take shape in the glass as this gorgeous, polished Barolo opens up in the glass. There is plenty of Arborina tannic backbone and freshness to support the long, energetic finish. This is a dazzling wine from Elio Altare.

Elio Altare describes 2001 as a strong vintage with an early September rain that arrived at just the right moment. Over the years I have had the privilege to taste just about every wine made here. I have always been impressed with the ageworthiness of Altare’s Baroli, and his other wines, too, to tell the truth. These 2001 Baroli are all exceptional. I am thrilled to have a few bottles left. The 2001 Barolo Arborina shows a darker ruby, with a captivating, sweet nose of spices and minerals. On the palate it reveals darker flavors than the normale, with plenty of ripe fruit and sensations of dark raspberry and plums. Full-bodied and structured, with a very long finish it will benefit from some bottle age and drink well to at least age 20.
