Tasting notes
The 1995 Barolo Vigneto Arborina comes across as rustic and oxidized, with hard tannins that are pushing through. Smoke, game and dark spice notes emerge, but the 1995 doesn't have enough fruit or freshness to drink well for more than another few years, although there is no further upside here. The green tannins, unfocused aromatics and round the edges feel are the signatures of a vintage marked by August hail and ensuing rot.

Altare has turned in a stunning effort. The lush, voluptuously-textured 1995 Barolo Arborina exhibits a saturated dark ruby/garnet color. Full-bodied, with great purity, the layered complexity that comes from low yields and ripe fruit, and a bouquet of Asian spices, tobacco, smoke, and black cherries, this is a sweet, rich, forward but hedonistically-styled Barolo. Anticipated maturity: now-2008. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Good medium red. Complex, deep aromas of plum, mocha and brown spices. Big, rich and palate caressing; already displays impressive sweetness and depth of flavor. Full for a '95, and very well balanced. Finishes with ripe, tongue coating tannins.
