Bright and perfumed, with piercing floral, violet, and spice aromas that are supported by ripe plum, blackberry, wild herbs, and garrigue, the 2007 The Standish Wine Company The Relic is a co-fermented blend of 96% Shiraz (from vines planted in 1912) and 4% Viognier that offers up hedonistic, round, and supple aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with no hard edges, loads of layers, and a lengthy, beautifully rich finish, this solid ’07 can be drunk now, or cellared for a decade.

Just slightly less impressive than the ’06, the 2007 The Relic, co-fermented with 4% Viognier and from vines planted on their own roots in 1912, is a downright sexy, yet elegant, beauty of wine that yields decadent blackberry liqueur, smoked bacon, graphite, and crushed flowers on the nose. Silky, seductive, and with real class and depth, the wine is full bodied on the palate with a seamless, polished character, perfect balance, and long brilliantly focused finish. Certainly superb now, this should continue to evolve and age gracefully for 10-12 years.

The 2007 Shiraz-Viognier (4%) The Relic was sourced from the same parcel. Wild-fermented, it offers up a sexy bouquet of floral notes, bacon, smoked meat, incense, and blueberry. Dense, sweet and layered on the palate, it will offer much pleasure over the next 8-10 years. It does not get much better than this from the 2007 vintage. The Standish Wine Company is quickly becoming one of the Barossa Valley’s benchmarks. Importer: Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. (206) 923-1376

(a 96/4 blend) Opaque purple. Pungent bouquet displays aromas of dark berries, candied plum and licorice. Picks up brighter raspberry and rose qualities with aeration and offers deep, sweet red and dark berry flavors and velvety texture. Livelier than the 2006 version, combining intense sweetness with strong mineral cut on the spicy finish.
