Tasting notes
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin impresses for its textured, refined personality. It is one of the less overt 2009s here. Instead the wine presents an attractive fabric of dark berries, licorice, smoke and spices, all supportedby veins of insistent Gevrey minerality. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. (vinified with 30% whole clusters): Good deep red. Wild, reduced aroma of maraschino cherry, violet, licorice, minerals and game. At once fat and juicy, with good energy and precision to its red cherry and brown spice flavors. Offers a lovely combination of sweetness and spine. Finishes long and ripely tannic, with a strong component of game and lingering minerality. A very strong village wine.
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin reveals great aromatic intensity and plenty of vibrancy in its dark fruit. All of the elements build nicely towards the enveloping, textured finish. This shows lovely tension for the vintage. Esmonin used 30% whole bunches for the Gevrey.
(30% vendange entier; only 5% new oak) Deep ruby-red. Nice mineral lift to the aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice and black pepper; less chocolatey than the Cote de Nuits. Urgent crushed dark fruit flavors convey excellent intensity and density; very ripe, fat and rich but not exaggerated or over the top. Finishes with substantial broad tannins. Strong for this cuvee
