Deep red-ruby. Wild dark berries and meat on the superripe nose. Sweet, fat and large-scaled for village wine; fills the mouth with smoke and game flavors. At the limits of roasted but manages to maintain its balance. When I mentioned to Serge Groffier that I found this wine a bit heavy after tasting the '06s, he noted that none of his parcels reached 13% potential alcohol in 2005.

The 2005 Gevrey Chambertin leads with smoky, gamey aromas and slightly tart cherry, displays considerably more sweetness of fruit, refinement and polish of tannins than is usual for this wine, and finishes broad and juicy, with accents of sage and pepper. This will make lovely near-term drinking. A Peter Vezan Selection (various importers), Paris; fax 011 33 1 42 55 42 93.

Medium-deep red-ruby. Wild aromas of black cherry and meat complicated by a mineral element. Broad, sweet and full, with the smoked meat character carrying through on the palate. Slightly minty and a tad dry on the end.
