Bright, dark red. Musky, reduced aromas of wild red berries, coffee, underbrush and game; complex and sexy. Then less pliant and expressive in the mouth than the Brunate, with a more restrained sweetness. But this backward wine's lovely definition, strong tannic spine and finishing minerality suggest it will reward aging.

The 2007 Barolo Case Nere could easily be mistaken for a Barolo from Serralunga. It is a huge, hulking wine packed with dark plums, wild cherries, smoke, underbrush, spices and French oak. The Case Nere turns a bit more elegant on the mid-palate yet remains a fairly large-scaled, extroverted wine best suited to rich, hearty foods. The tannins are surprisingly soft for such a big, young Barolo, and the Case Nere can be enjoyed upon release, especially with some air. A streak of graphite and minerals adds freshness on the finish.
