The 2003 St Joseph Lieu Dit St Joseph is another sensational example of this cuvee. Still vibrant purple and opaque, with killer notes of smoked plums, violets, incense and licorice soaring from the glass, this full-bodied, thick, chewy and blockbuster-styled St Joseph has sweet tannin and a great finish. It's guaranteed to put a smile on your face and should continue to thrill for another 5-8 years at a minimum.

Medium ruby color. Remarkably concentrated aromas of violet and dark cherry, with a powerful black pepper accent. Dense and solid on the palate, with graphite- and iron-laced bitter cherry and smoked meat flavors that are sharply focused and deep. This could be confused with an Hermitage, thanks to its concentration of flavor and weighty texture (yields were off by 60% this year, according to Philippe). For all the power and intensity here, this wine finishes with a graceful quality and good focus.
