Deep garnet colored, the 2008 Clos de Sarpe has a nose that is wonderfully ripe and decadent with baked plums, kirsch and Black Forest cake notions over hints of star anise, incense, char-grilled meats and unsmoked cigar. Medium-bodied with incredible freshness and minerality coming through on the palate, it features wonderful red fruit accents and spicy sparks in the mouth with a long, mineral-laced finish.

A brilliant effort for this vintage, yields were a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare in 2008 and the result is only 8,000 bottles produced. Opulent, fleshy and full-bodied, this wine has reigned in the excruciatingly high level of tannins, but the 15% alcohol gives it loads of glycerin as well as a chewy mouthfeel. Inky/purple-colored and super-concentrated with relatively civilized tannins, this stunning 2008 should be accessible in 3-5 years (atypical for Clos de Sarpe) and drink well for 30+. About the producer
This small Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé estate is a FINE+RARE favourite. Run by Maylis Marcenat, the fourth generation of her family to do so, the 3.7-hectare vineyard has old vines and limestone soils, producing wines of incredible freshness and great ageability.
