The 2004 Château Clos de Sarpe is seriously good, offering complex notes of jammy blackberry, blackcurrants, tobacco, and spring flowers, with even a hint of forest floor already developing. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced on the palate, it's wonderfully textured, has plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's a terrific 2004.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2004 Clos de Sarpe gives up pronounced notes of roasted meats, mocha, chargrill and charcuterie with a core of crème de cassis, baked plums and dried herbs with a waft of black olives. The palate is medium-bodied with great richness and velvety tannins, finishing long and spicy.

Very dark, sweet, gamey nose but rather light, simple and aggressively cloaked in sweet oak. Not fine and with very aggressive tannins. (JR)
