Tasting notes
The 2010 El Reventon comes from a one-hectare parcel of Garnacha. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with dark berries, roasted herbs, white fennel and a tincture of something exotic, perhaps wild honey and apricot blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious, succinct entry: a Grenache that is beautifully balanced with perfectly judged acidity. This is one of those wines that words cannot encapsulate: simply pure, unadulterated, expressive Grenache that is nothing short of world class. Drink 2014-2025+ If you are seeking Grenache that is understated, complex, full of character and honest without resorting to new oak or ostentation, then look no further than the exquisite and rather brilliant wines of Bodegas Jimenez-Landi, which have rightly been lauded by my predecessors in previous issues. I stand accused of being even more ecstatic about these wines that were riveting earlier this year: wines that stimulate the intellect as much as the senses. (100% garnacha, aged for 16 months in French oak): Light red. An explosive, seductively perfumed bouquet of fresh red berries, incense and rose oil, with a smoky overtone. Juicy and precise, offering sweet cherry and raspberry flavors and silky texture. A tangy mineral note adds cut to a long, spicy and sharply focused finish. This wine shows the vivacity and light touch of a high-class Chambolle-Musigny.
Jiménez Landi is the oldest of the wineries mentioned here, and their first vintage was 2004, but their wines were not really defined until 2007 since when the focus is clearly on Garnacha. The winery is located in the old family house in Méntrida, a village in the province of Toledo that gives its name to a DO. Ataúlfos is a vineyard in El Real de San Vicente (Toledo), planted with 40-year-old Garnacha on granitic soil with chalky topsoil, a little unusual in the area, which gives the wine finesse. The mother rock is a mere 30 centimetres from the surface. It is located at 740 metres above sea level and faces west. The unusual name is simply the name of the owner of the vineyard. This was the earliest harvested vineyard in 2010 as the grapes were picked 7 September. This is one of their top-of-the-range single-vineyard (small production) bottlings, but the good news is that from 2011 they work 1.5 ha in this vineyard, so production will increase. If their wines from Cebreros have some resemblance to the northern Rhône, here we are closer to the Côte de Nuits. Very pale in colour, some herbaceous notes on the nose, which together with the violets and red fruit give a high-pitched overall tone. It is extremely young, and you can still perceive the oak in the background. In the mouth it is more integrated, with ultra-fine tannins. It coats your mouth with a velvety texture, and the flavours are full of acid strawberry, sour cherry and even some lychee. Very elegant and balanced. (LG)
