Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2010 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots is a magnificent follow-up to the 2009 with very precise blackberry and briary scents, a hint of dried violet petals developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and a clinical seam of acidity that delivers a sense of symmetry. It is not quite touching the 2005 in terms of quality but it comes damn close thanks to its marvelous freshness. Tasted June 2015.

Good deep red. Deeper-pitched, more earth-dominated aromas of dark raspberry, meat, leather and smoke. Intensely flavored but youthfully tight, with soil and game flavors currently dominating primary fruits. In a distinctly more meaty and less obviously sweet style than the Petits-Mont but with superb energy on the back. From a mix of 90-, 60- and 40-year old vines.

The 2010 Vosne-Romanee Les Reignots wraps around the palate with layers of fruit in an understated style that is quite appealing. The Reignots is all about detail and nuance. Raspberries, crushed flowers and sweet spices waft from the glass on the soft, sensual finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s wines keep getting better. The improvement is less a reflection of the underlying vintages and more the result of the work the estate has done to convert their vineyards to biodynamic farming. These are some of the most unique and compelling wines being made anywhere in Burgundy. The house style emphasizes the weightless transparency, finesse and sweetness that only Pinot Noir (and perhaps Nebbiolo) is capable of. As good as the 2010s are, the 2009s have also turned out beautifully. I will report on those wines in the April issue. Deep red with ruby highlights. Knockout wild nose combines black raspberry, dark chocolate, spices and smoky minerality, plus a whiff of leather. Chewy, dark and brooding, with superb intensity to its sappy dark berry and violet flavors. The impression of dryness is accentuated by strong stony minerality. This vibrant, very young Reignots finishes with terrific structure and sappy persistence.
