Another of the surprises of the day, Lignier’s 1992 Clos de la Roche is exquisite. Fruity, supple and quite giving in its feel, the 1992 is one of the more immediate wines in this vertical. Although not exactly a complex wine, the 1992 is hugely delicious and rewarding today. Sweet red cherry, mint, rose petal and spice notes are pushed forward. This is an especially succulent, fruity Clos de la Roche with tons of sheer appeal. I loved it.

The ruby-colored 1992 Clos de la Roche has smoky tobacco, dark cherry, spice, and cedar aromas. This mature red Burgundy reveals sweet candied fruit, stone, and black cherry juice flavors. It is medium-bodied, satin-textured, and has a firm, structured finish. Drink it over the next 5 years.

The 1992 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from Domaine Hubert Lignier was made by Hubert and his late son Romain, who joined Hubert that year. Showing light degradation in color on the rim, the 1992 has a precise bouquet with cranberry, raspberry and wilted rose petals on the nose, not powerful yet very precise. It gains intensity in the glass, never fading over the course of an hour. The palate mirrors the aromatics insofar that it is framed by lace-like tannins, exceedingly fresh and quite saline. But there is gorgeous tart red fruit at its core, with none of the greenness that you can find in other red wines from this vintage. Those with bottles of this in their cellar should not hesitate to open one.
