Score 65/100 · Drink 2023-2028, Neal Martin, Apr 2024

Even one of the most consistent estates of the Médoc could not produce a decent wine in 1974. This Montrose, picked between 21 September and 10 October, has a feeble, enervated nose with negligible fruit. The palate has a distasteful metallic element and an acrid finish. The score is moot - there are dozens of superior Montrose wines.

Tasted at the Montrose vertical in Stamford, the 1974 Montrose turned out to be the weakest wine of the early 1970s. Picked between 21 September and 10 October, it has a thin and weedy nose expunged of fruit, presuming there had been much there in the first place. The palate is harsh with a metallic veneer and a rasping finish. I don't think I could recommend this even for curiosity purposes. Tasted May 2016.
