The last vintage with the old, white label, the sensational 2009 Crozes Hermitage Cuvee Christophe is a ripe, voluptuous and unctuous effort that offers layers of ripe red and black fruits, smoked meats and roasted herbs. It still shows hints of its oak elevage as well as ripe tannin, a solid mid-palate and a great finish. I’d be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar, and would drink them over the coming 7-8 years.

Opaque ruby. Cherry-cola and blackberry on the nose, with complicating notes of black pepper, incense and licorice. Oak-spiced dark fruit liqueur flavors show impressive depth and pick up spiciness with air. Chewy and powerful on the finish, which repeats the cola note and lingers with impressive tenacity. This cuvee gets the most oak of the Crozes bottlings because it is sourced from the granitic soils of Larnage and has far more structure and power, says Desmeure.
