Score 98/100 · Drink 2015-2045, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Dec 2015

The brilliantly amber-colored 1938 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec indicates a rich, ripe, intense and elegant fruit on the nose where potted apricot, quince and raisin flavors mingle with German black bread (Pumpernickel), dried porcini, white pepper and limestone flavors -- absolutely great in its combination of purity, precision, intensity, ripeness and concentration. On the palate, the 1938 is richer, smoother, more concentrated, sweeter and also more powerful than the corresponding 1936 and 1939 ,but like the successor absolutely fresh, vital and tension-filled. Great fruit-intensity and vibrancy here. Very compact and due to its penetrating minerality and firm acidity structure, it is almost dry and extremely stimulating in the finish. A great wine between dry and sweet. Ageless and another candidate for the 100th birthday party. This is another Must Buy, because the finish is so endless and salty, so pure and concentrated. Again, it reminds me of a Laphroaig Whisky. The wine was still delicious after 16 days. (535 EUR)
