Score 90/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Neal Martin, Apr 2019

The 1971 Rauzan-Ségla is a pleasant revelation considering the vintage. It has surprisingly generous and expressive bouquet, fully mature, scents of dried blood, marjoram, leather, molasses and wilted rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with good density, a gentle grip in the mouth, decent fruit concentration and plenty of freshness. I admire the vivacity and cohesion of this Rauzan-Ségla. It is not a sophisticated or profound Claret, but it has a lovely smooth texture, hints of black truffle towards the finish and better length than many of its peers. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château.

Score 76/100 · Drink 1988, Robert Parker, Jan 1998

Medium to light ruby, with some noticeable brown in the color, this wine, which was made during a dreadful period for Rauzan-Segla, still has some life to it. The herbaceous, cedary bouquet tends to fade quickly in the glass, but there is still enough fruit and ripeness in the wine to provide some degree of charm and pleasure. However, don't push your luck as this wine is quite fragile and near collapse. Last tasted, 1/88.
