The 2001 Doisy-Daëne has a gorgeous bouquet of lanolin, honeysuckle, marmalade and yellow flowers, well defined and quintessentially Barsac. This is blossoming at 20 years of age. The palate is very well balanced with a viscous opening. What strikes me is the purity of this Barsac, plus the tension and race from start to finish. Orange zest, quince and touches of saffron line the finish, which fans out wonderfully. Superb.

Orange gold – the same colour as the Laville Haut-Brion 2003 served at the same meal. Luminous colour and miraculous freshness. Barley sugar but not at all cloying. Hint of br û lée, So refreshing! Even a bit flirtatious. But not the longest lasting. (JR)
Pale orangey copper colour. Barley sugar start but clean as a whistle – just a little lighter than many a 2001 sweet white bordeaux. Clean and tangy on the end. I wonder whether all the best, richest fruit was diverted into L'Extravagant? Competent rather than compelling. (JR)
The Doisy Daene 2001 is still quite backward on the nose compared to its peers and as a consequence, demands more coaxing from the glass: beeswax, honeycomb and a touch of lanolin. The palate is well balanced with a vibrant, citrus-fresh entry. This Barsac is struck through with engaging, lovely orange peel and citrus lemon notes here that segue into a refined and tensile finish that leaves you wanting any sip.
About the producer
This Second Growth estate has origins dating back to the late 1800s. It is, however, under the ownership of the Dubourdieu family – who took over the Barsac property in 1924 – that Ch. Doisy-Daëne truly flourished.
