Tasting notes
The super-rich, opulent 2000 Gewurztraminer Altenbourg Cuvee Laurence is a more refined yet denser wine than the Cuvee Laurence. Described as "unctuous" by the ever gracious Madame Collette Faller, this domaine's matron, it is thickly textured, medium to full-bodied, balanced, and profound. Its potently spicy, flamboyant personality is crammed with fruit. Marilyn Monroe reincarnated as wine? Projected maturity: 2003-2014. According to Laurence Faller, this highly regarded estate's winemaker, "unquestionably 2000 must be considered one of the finest vintages of the last decade. It reminds me of 1998 but with more botrytis, yet not too much." Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Fresh, complex nose features spicy dried meats, mandarin orange and candied grapefruit peel. Fat and rich but also succulent, spicy and nicely delineated. A dense wine with considerable power and impressive structure. Finishes very spicy and vibrant, firm but not bitter or hot.
